Polar Storm(2009)

Polar Storm (also known as Pole Reversal) is a 2009 American-Canadian made-for-television science fiction-disaster-thriller film that is directed by Paul Ziller and was aired on Sci-Fi Channel on March 28, 2009. The film focuses on the Earth suffering a reversal of polarity, caused by the impact of the comet's fragment in Northern Alaska that sets off its cataclysmic, electromagnetic polar reversal storm.

In the fall, cold conditions and polar darkness return to the Arctic. As is typical for this time of year, ice growth was brisk in October, growing at an average 96,000 square kilometers per day (37,000 square miles per day).

The present work examines the relations between Polar Cap (PC) indices and the 1-min SYM-H and hourly Dst indices characterizing total (symmetrical) magnetospheric ring current intensities with particular emphasis on possible space weather applications. Using real-time PC indices in a source function may provide gradient values for the ring current intensities characterized by the Dst or SYM-H indices. Upon integration during magnetic storm events the PC-based gradients may provide estimate of ring current index values up to one hour ahead. In a study of the strongest storm events in 2009-2018, the average correlation between real and corresponding equivalent SYM-H index values based on simulated real-time PC indices was 0.836. It is demonstrated that amplitude relations and timing differences for peak polar cap and ring current indices suggested in publications over the years and in a recent report from the International Organisation of Standardization (ISO) are not valid and could be misleading.

University of Manitoba researcher David Barber said experts around the world believed the ice was recovering because satellite images showed it expanding, but the thick, multiyear frozen sheets have been replaced by thin ice that cannot support the weight of a polar bear.

"Polar bears are being restricted to a small fringe of where this multiyear sea ice is. As we went further and further north, we saw less and less polar bears because this ice wasn't even strong enough for the polar bears to stand on," said Barber, who returned from an expedition to the Beaufort Sea in September.

At least seven cases of mature male polar bears eating bear cubs have been spotted this year among the animals around Churchill, Manitoba, said Ian Stirling, a retired Environment Canada biologist who specializes in the Churchill bears.

The CSU-CHILL radar also made observations of the differential reflectivity ( Z D R \displaystyle Z_DR ) and differential propagation phase shift ( Ψ d p \displaystyle \Psi _dp ) in this PPI sweep. In combination with the basic co-polar reflectivity information, these polarimetric data fields were used to estimate the instantaneous rain rate. As shown in the following plot, maximum rain rates on the order of 60 mm / hour were diagnosed in the echo core.

Arctic sea ice extent (coverage) was higher than many recent years, but much lower than the long-term average. Multiyear ice extent, sea-ice thickness and volume rebounded after a near-record low in 2021, but was below conditions in the 1980s and 1990s, with older ice extremely rare. Open water developed near the North Pole for much of the summer, allowing polar-class tourist and research vessels easy access. The Northern Sea Route and Northwest Passage were also largely open. 041b061a72
