During the early stages of Southside's takeover, 2Pac along with several others like The Outlawz and fellow Compton Crip Kodak Black were signed to Thug Life Records in order to create their own label. The label at first would include only a few artists however quickly their roster would expand to include members of the Wu-Tang Clan and Snoop Dogg, as well as group consisting of rappers from the Harlem, New York scene like Game and Common.

During the earliest stages of Southside Compton, 2Pac was the leading face of the label, and he worked closely with Suge Knight to build up Thug Life Records. After serving a prison sentence for murder, and successfully running a business empire, 2Pac launched his own label Tha Row Records. However, he later became dissatisfied with his life in the music business. He grew tired of having no say in the direction of his record label. He found himself imprisoned again, and sought to break free.

Aftermath's first album,The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, was released on March 23, 1996. 2Pac would later say that his first record for Aftermath,All Eyez On Me, which was released a year later, was his best album. It sold over 5 million copies worldwide, and was certified 4x Platinum (selling over 4 million units) by the RIAA.

2Pac's second album for Aftermath,All Eyez On Me, was released on November 16, 1997. It was a departure from his previous albums, featuring a harder edged vocal performance with violent lyrics, as well as references to violence and firearms. It was his most successful album, selling over 10 million copies worldwide and certified 4x Platinum, with over 4 million sold in the US alone. Although he is traditionally known for his song "Me Against the World,"All Eyez On Me features the title track as the opening song, and contains many other heavy songs including "Hail Mary," "Against All Odds," "Me Against the World," and "I Ain't Mad." The album was certified Gold in just 30 days, despite its controversial subject matter.
